Pickleball in Irvine, California

Irvine has a broad public court network, city-run pickleball lessons, and an established team league. The largest dedicated sites are Mike Ward Community Park with eight lighted courts and Portola Springs Community Park with six. For scheduled partner rotation rather than simple court availability, the Merage JCC publishes recurring indoor open play.

Pickleball Courts in Irvine

Mike Ward Community Park – Woodbridge

Address: 20 Lake Road, Irvine, CA 92604

Mike Ward has eight lighted dedicated pickleball courts. Courts 3 and 4 can be reserved online; residents currently pay $17 per hour and non-residents $19. They are available for drop-in use when unreserved or when a reservation is a no-show, but players must leave immediately if the permit holder arrives.

Portola Springs Community Park

Address: 900 Tomato Springs, Irvine, CA 92618

Portola Springs has six lighted dedicated courts. Courts 5 and 6 follow the same city reservation and drop-in rules and host Irvine Team Pickleball league play. Use the official Irvine pickleball court and reservation guide before visiting.

Heritage Park and Los Olivos Community Park

Addresses: 14301 Yale Avenue and 101 Alfonso, Irvine, CA 92618

Heritage Park has four lighted dedicated courts, while Los Olivos has two. The city also lists 10 hybrid tennis-and-pickleball courts across Heritage, Knollcrest, Los Olivos, Portola Springs, San Carlo, Turtle Rock, and University parks. Great Park courts are still under evaluation, so do not plan a game there yet.

Merage JCC of Orange County

Address: 1 Federation Way, Irvine, CA 92603

The J has four indoor courts and two lighted outdoor courts, with current recurring indoor open play Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Check the official JCC pickleball schedule and confirm member or visitor access before arriving.

Pickleball Lessons in Irvine

The City of Irvine runs junior, adult, and private lessons at Mike Ward, Portola Springs, and Heritage parks. Beginners should register for an adult beginning class, where instruction covers fundamentals before they attempt unstructured drop-in games. The city's current sessions and instructors are listed on the official Irvine pickleball lessons page. The Merage JCC also offers classes, clinics, and individual or group lessons. Players comparing other instruction can browse local pickleball coaches.

Irvine Pickleball Open Play, Leagues, and Tournaments

The Merage JCC publishes the clearest recurring organized pickleball open play in Irvine, with indoor sessions seven mornings a week for all levels. The program also advertises classes, socials, leagues, round robins, and tournaments; use its current schedule for actual dates.

The City of Irvine's ITP league is a socially competitive 3.5-level team league at Portola Springs. Eight teams play a seven-week round robin followed by three weeks of playoffs; each team needs at least two men and two women and may carry up to eight players. Contact league director Matthew Yuen at 657-644-1202 for the current season. Public court drop-in availability is not the same as organized open play and does not guarantee partners. Check local pickleball announcements for additional dated events.

How Visitors and Solo Players Can Find a Game

If you already have partners, reserve Mike Ward Courts 3 or 4 or Portola Springs Courts 5 or 6; non-residents can book up to three days ahead. A solo visitor should contact the Merage JCC, confirm visitor access, and attend a published open-play session where rotation and other players are part of the format. Irvine's public parks offer many courts, but arriving at an open court alone is not a reliable game plan. Use Irvine pickleball clubs and groups to arrange a park meetup in advance.
